Texts for Times of Tragedy

Sefaria joins the entire Jewish community in mourning the victims of the devastating shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA.

Our library can be a resource to all who seek out Jewish texts as we process and respond to this tragedy.

The Book of Psalms reminds us of our relationship with the Divine during difficult times.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
those crushed in spirit He delivers

-Psalms, 34:19

The victims in Pittsburgh were mainstays of their communities. In the traditional liturgy, during Shabbat prayers, we acknowledge those whose contributions allow the synagogue community to thrive.

May the One Who Blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, bless everyone in this holy congregation, together with all holy congregations...and may God bless those who unite to pray in synagogues, and those who come there to pray...and all those who faithfully engage with the needs of the community....
